Gas Line Safety: 6 Warning Signs Every Homeowner Must Know

Natural gas powers heaters, stoves, water heaters, dryers, and fireplaces in millions of Southern California homes. When it works correctly, it's one of the most efficient and cost-effective energy sources available. When a gas line develops a problem, it becomes one of the most dangerous situations a homeowner can face.

The 6 Warning Signs of a Gas Line Problem

1. The Smell of Rotten Eggs or Sulfur

Natural gas is odorless in its natural state. Gas companies add mercaptan — a chemical compound that smells like rotten eggs or sulfur — specifically so people can detect leaks. If you smell this anywhere in your home, treat it as a gas leak immediately.

2. Hissing or Whistling Sound Near Gas Lines or Appliances

A hissing sound near your gas meter, along gas lines in the utility room, or behind gas appliances can indicate gas escaping from a pipe or fitting. This sound may be very faint — trust your ears and investigate immediately.

3. Dead or Yellowing Vegetation in a Specific Area

If a section of your lawn or garden has unexplained dead patches while the surrounding vegetation is healthy, an underground gas line leak may be displacing oxygen in the soil, killing plant roots. This is especially worth checking if it runs in a line from the street to your home (where the main gas service enters).

4. Bubbling in Standing Water

Gas escaping from an underground line can cause bubbling in puddles, mud, or even a pool. If you see unexplained bubbling in water near your property, call SoCalGas and a licensed plumber immediately.

5. Physical Symptoms: Dizziness, Nausea, or Headaches

Carbon monoxide (from incomplete gas combustion) and methane displacement can cause headaches, nausea, dizziness, difficulty breathing, and even loss of consciousness at high concentrations. If multiple family members are experiencing these symptoms at home, leave the building and call 911.

6. Higher-Than-Normal Gas Bills

A sustained increase in your SoCalGas bill without a corresponding increase in usage may indicate a slow leak that isn't yet strong enough to smell but is measurable on your meter.

What to Do If You Suspect a Gas Leak

  1. Do NOT turn any light switches or electrical devices on or off — a spark can ignite gas
  2. Leave the building immediately, leaving doors open as you go
  3. Once outside, call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200 and 911
  4. Do not re-enter until authorities clear the building
  5. After clearance, call a licensed gas line plumber to locate and repair the leak
