Why Is My Water Heater Making Noise? Causes and Solutions

A noisy water heater is your unit's way of telling you something is wrong. In Southern California's hard water environment — where Burbank tap water has high mineral content — sediment buildup is the #1 cause of water heater noise. But different sounds indicate different problems, each with its own fix.

The Most Common Water Heater Sounds and What They Mean

Popping or Rumbling

This is the most common complaint and almost always indicates sediment buildup on the bottom of the tank. As the heating element heats water trapped beneath the sediment, it causes popping and rumbling sounds. Heavy sediment buildup reduces efficiency (the unit works harder to heat water through the layer of minerals), shortens the heater's lifespan, and can eventually damage the tank itself.

Solution: Flush the tank annually to remove sediment. If buildup is severe, a professional flush and anode rod replacement will restore efficiency. Tanks with very heavy deposits may need replacement.

Hissing or Sizzling

A hissing sound from a gas water heater often indicates condensation dripping onto the burner — especially on cold mornings when a cold tank heats up quickly. This is usually harmless. However, hissing from the pressure relief valve is not normal and indicates dangerously high pressure inside the tank.

Solution: Morning condensation hissing is normal. Hissing from the T&P valve — call a plumber immediately. A faulty pressure relief valve is a safety hazard.

High-Pitched Whining or Singing

This sound typically comes from the inlet valve (the cold water supply valve) that is partially closed or has mineral buildup restricting flow. It creates a whistling sound as water is forced through the restriction.

Solution: Check that the cold water inlet valve is fully open. If the whining persists, the valve may need to be replaced.

Ticking or Clicking

Regular ticking is almost always normal — it's the pipes expanding and contracting as the water heater cycles on and off. The heat straps (pipe clips) on the supply and discharge lines can also tick slightly. This rarely indicates a problem.

Solution: Usually no action needed. If ticking is loud and new, have a plumber inspect the unit.

When to Replace Instead of Repair

If your water heater is more than 10 years old and producing persistent noise even after flushing, it's likely that the tank itself has significant corrosion or the elements are failing. At that point, replacement is more cost-effective than repair — especially with the available rebates on high-efficiency models.
